Thank You for Supporting Proposition 18

The leaders of the Yes on Proposition 18 campaign extend deep gratitude and appreciation to everyone who endorsed this initiative and worked hard to extend the right to vote to young people who turn 18 before the general election.

The Proposition 18 campaign was supported by a broad coalition that was activated and led by Assemblymember Kevin Mullin, Assemblymember Evan Low, and the California Environmental Voters.

“While we were not successful in this election, the hard work and advocacy by so many on behalf of Proposition 18 laid the groundwork for this significant extension of voting rights to be achieved in the future,” said Assemblymember Kevin Mullin. “I, and my father before me, have worked for many years to extend the vote to young people who turn 18 by the general election. I am grateful to the broad and diverse coalition of youth advocates, environmentalists, teachers, veterans and essential workers, and others who endorsed and worked hard to support this initiative. With this coalition’s ongoing support, I know that the extension of voting rights to young people embedded in Proposition 18 will eventually be approved, and will strengthen our democracy by building lifelong civic participation habits.”

“While we were not successful in this election, millions of Californians agreed that voters who will turn 18 by the general election should have the right to engage in our democratic process by also voting in the primary,” said Assemblymember Evan Low. “We are grateful to all who supported the vital message of the Proposition 18 campaign. Election issues that affect us all, including climate change, gun laws, student debt, healthcare, and the economy, particularly impact young people. Voters who will turn 18 by the general election should have the right to engage in our democratic process by also voting in the primary. Expanding the right for first-time voters to participate in the full election cycle will build on the integrity of our democracy and election systems. California, like many other states, should approve this reasonable expansion of voting rights for first-time voters.”

“We need a more participatory democracy to be able to make progress on critical issues of our time: eliminating racial injustice, creating an economy that works for all, and fighting the climate crisis,” said Mary Creasman, CEO of the California Environmental Voters. “Although we are disappointed that Proposition 18 did not garner more than 50 percent of the vote in this election, EnviroVoters is committed to continue working to expand the right to vote for California’s young people. We remain confident that California will act in the interest of a better future and will expand the right to vote in the primary for those who are 18 by the general election.”
