Statement by California League of Conservation Voters CEO Sarah Rose on changes to SB 350:

“Along with many allies in the public health and environmental communities, we are deeply disappointed that the oil industry’s multi-million dollar campaign of deceit persuaded several lawmakers, some of whom represent the most polluted districts in the state, to withhold support for an important component of SB 350 – namely, the reduction of petroleum by 50% by the year 2030. We are proud that Governor Jerry Brown, Pro Tem Kevin de León and Speaker Toni Atkins refused to allow the oil industry to succeed in watering down the authority of the California Air Resources Board to protect the quality of our air. The good news is the oil industry will ultimately lose this fight. Californians overwhelmingly want a cleaner, healthier future that looks like the goals outlined in SB 350 and SB 32. They reject the Western State Petroleum Association’s dark version of California where we are shackled to dirty fossil fuels. We remain steadfast in fighting to pass SB 350 and SB 32 and other climate policies and in working to clean our air, transition to clean energy, and build healthy communities that are resilient to the threat of climate change.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
