LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Biden-Harris Administration’s designation of the Chuckwalla and Sáttítla National Monuments.

Statement from Mike Young, Executive Director, California Environmental Voters:

“President Biden’s designation of the Chuckwalla and Sáttítla National Monuments is a critical victory for climate action and biodiversity. These monuments protect nearly a million acres of mountains and desert ecosystems, including critical wildlife corridors and habitats for endangered species. They also preserve sacred sites and cultural landmarks significant to Indigenous communities, ensuring these histories are honored and safeguarded.

As climate impacts intensify, protecting public lands is essential for natural carbon sequestration, water resilience, and biodiversity. These designations reflect a bold commitment to addressing the climate crisis and protecting cultural heritage for generations to come. It’s crucial to cement these protections now and protect them from being rolled back by short-sighted political decisions in the next Administration.

We applaud President Biden for listening to local communities and designating these two additional national monuments. In doing so, he will have a lasting environmental legacy of protecting more acres of public lands than any president. We urge all leaders to follow suit in defending our nation’s public lands. These monuments are lifelines for ecosystems, communities, and our fight against the climate crisis – we must continue to stand up to preserve these critical resources before it’s too late.”
