OAKLAND, Calif.— Sarah Rose, CEO of CLCV, issued the following statement in response to the EPA’s release of the “Clean Power Plan”:
“The Clean Power Plan is the single biggest step our country has ever taken to combat climate change and is a huge win for public health. These historic standards, which are modeled in part on California’s pioneering climate and clean air policies, will ensure that big polluters can no longer spew an unlimited amount of carbon pollution into our air. The Clean Power Plan is a flexible plan that empowers California to continue to craft our own solutions to reduce carbon pollution and spur growth in clean energy.”
“This transition to cleaner energy will protect our families and communities from harmful air pollution, too. In 2030, we’ll avoid up to 3,600 fewer premature deaths; 90,000 fewer asthma attacks in children; 1,700 fewer hospital admissions; and avoid 300,000 missed days of school and work. The historic Clean Power Plan will provide our children and grandchildren with a cleaner, safer future.”
“We’re proud that California is already on track to meet and exceed these new, national reduction targets, having committed to cutting emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 under an executive order issued earlier this year by Governor Jerry Brown. We’re eager for our state to pioneer climate policy once again by passing groundbreaking climate legislation, SB 350 and SB 32, both currently in the Assembly, and urge our lawmakers to pass these bills without hesitation.”
“I’m proud that California is leading the fight to clean up our air and tackle climate change. The Clean Power Plan isn’t just good for our environment and our public health, but it’s also a tremendous opportunity for California to continue to create clean energy jobs and be a leader in the clean energy economy. These clean air protections will once again demonstrate that American ingenuity and innovation leads to improved health, lower costs and a stronger economy.”
